As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, we shine a spotlight on Laura Weston, Business Leader of Optimum Fire Stopping, whose journey is a testament to resilience, ambition, and the power of breaking barriers in the construction industry.
From Trainee to Leader: A Career Built on Growth

Laura’s Optimum journey began in March 2004 when she joined as a trainee Quantity Surveyor. With hard work, dedication and the support of her team, she has climbed the ranks during her career. Following a successful promotion to Senior QS in 2015, she was approached by the Directors in March 2022 to lead the Fire Stopping Division as the Business Team Leader.
Reflecting on her career milestones, Laura highlights key moments that fueled her ambition:
✔ Completing her HNC and surveying her first large solo project, which boosted her confidence.
✔ Successfully delivering challenging projects.
✔ Securing promotions and embracing leadership roles.
✔ Earning an NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations.
Overcoming Challenges in a Male-Dominated Industry
Whilst working in construction, Laura experienced gender stereotypes firsthand. Early in her career, she sometimes felt unheard or overlooked. However, with the support of her male colleagues at Optimum she learned to speak up and assert herself.
“Being a female in construction was rare at the start of my career, and communication could sometimes be a challenge. But with confidence and support, I found my voice,” she shares.
Leadership and the power of Role Models
For Laura, leadership is about effective communication and active listening. She takes pride in being an approachable, supportive manager who fosters teamwork and collaboration.
When asked about her inspirations, she acknowledges all women in construction as role models:
“I understand the challenges they face in gaining respect in this industry. I have been fortunate to work with strong, influential women at Optimum, particularly those on our Board of Directors, who inspire me every day.”
Accelerating Action for Gender Equality
This year’s IWD theme, #AccelerateAction, deeply resonates with Laura, who sees it as a call to push for real change and gender equality across all industries.
Her advice to young women entering the sector
“Don’t let a male-dominated environment intimidate you. Believe in your abilities and never be afraid to ask questions and speak up.”
Our Commitment to Female Leadership
As a business with a strong female leadership ethos, Laura credits Optimum for being a workplace that champions women’s success, giving her the trust, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.
Looking at the broader industry, she urges companies to do more by:
- Ensuring equal pay and benefits for women.
- Offering flexible and remote working options to support work-life balance, particularly for women with young children.
As we mark International Women’s Day 2025, Laura’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when businesses invest in talented women and champion their growth. At Optimum, across all our divisions, the commitment to equality is not just a statement—it’s a reality.
